Im not a big fan of arrogant, manipulative or controlling love interests but I dont think I was meant to like Frederick in this book. I also wanted her to tell her teacher that the only reason he was upset was because she knew all the answers. For example, when her allocator was complaining about her first day I wish she would have said something to defend herself, like: "What do you expect. I would have loved it if Nora was a little more snarky. I enjoyed her relationship with Helena but was kind of sad with how things ended. The explanation for her abilities was interesting. Her mysterious past and abilities intrigued me. I liked how the contrast in beliefs between the east and the west affected Nora. I thought the training was really exciting. I was in high school once, I remember hoping some boy who rejected me would come crawling and I could get some payback. I could totally understand her need for revenge against Hawk and empathize with the childish bravado and pride that led her to plan on seducing him and then abandon him once he fell in love. Her stepfather and sisters hated her and I don't think even her own mother cared much. She was a foot stomping termagant, but it was clear it was all done out of a sense of hurt and rejection. Sabre/Sara was sympathetic at first when she was with her awful family and then humiliated when Hawk married her by proxy and abandoned her sight unseen. My problem was that I could find no emotional connection to the characters. but I don't need to be reminded of it quite so often. Hey, don't get me wrong, being well-endowed is a nice thing. Apparently Hawk even whipped out a ruler and measured his awesome manliness at some point, since he was able to say confidently that he was 10" fully erect. ![]() You could make a drinking game out of the references to the size of Hawk's "throbbing shaft" or the number of times Sabre's ripe melons popped out of whatever she was wearing and get very, very intoxicated. It's very porny in an often hilarious way. If the elements of the old school bodice ripper do not offend or trigger you, this can be entertaining in an over-the-top train wreck sort of way. I'm not going to rate this because, honestly, I did so much skimming it's almost unfair to mark it as read. ![]() ![]() ![]() He brings us as close to Williams as we are ever likely to get. ![]() ![]() Lahr has decided not to track his subject in sequential detail but to dive into the tumultuous depths of the author's psyche and the glamorous chaos of his stage productions. The book is more a study of Williams's imagination and career than any plodding account of his "life." Mr. Lahr wanders freely among the dates of their exchanges with the playwright. And when the book comes to focus on key figures in Williams's career, like his agent Audrey Wood, the director Elia Kazan or his dubious friend Maria St. In the body of the book, we hear about the psychological effect of the parents on the child but really nothing about his education, his reading, his friends.
